En Plein Air

I regularly take my sketchbook with me to places to draw. Sometimes I go to the dunes in the area where I grew up, or to other places of nature. Often I make sketches when I am on vacation.
The drawings function as artworks themselves and are often an inspiration for paintings. They can be literal translations of the drawings, or a more free interpretation, or even a totally new image.
On this page some impressions of me painting or drawing en plein air and some artworks. They show an insight in outdoor projects.

EN PLEIN AIR SKETCHES VS THE WORKING-OUT IN THE ART STUDIO

Paris, near Place de la Concorde
On the right the preparatory sketch, without already knowing what would follow. And above the oilpainting that was inspired by the sketch.

In the Dome of Cologne
In the Dome of Cologne, I made a number of sketches with oil pastel, of the stained glass windows in the choir. In my art studio at home, I continued the theme with paintings in watercolor on paper.

Cologne: bridge over the Rhine
The bridge over the Rhine was an inspiration for several sketches with pencil, despite the fog and the cold in Januari. In my art studio at home, I translated some of the drawings into paintings with gouache on paper.

Lovely street in Avignon
Enjoying drawing in a pittoresk little street in Avignon.
On the right the drawings developed into new paintings.
Here an oil painting on cardboard.

Frankfurt
I made several sketches of different views in the city of Frankfurt. In my art studio I elaborated on the sketches and made a number of ink drawings and drawings with ecoline. From quite literal to more abstracted.
